SoundBlaster / BitPerfect Output 44100k

I'm attempting to use iec958 output w/my Audigy2 SoundBlaster Value card. From what I've read I should be able to directly output the sound via digital output in either 48k or 44.1k dependent on the source without going through a mixer. I have set my audio device to ALSA:iec958 and the sound is perfect within MythTV for videos and 48k. However, in MythMusic or XMMS when the output is 44.1k the sound is very clear, but, has some distortion at times. The distortion is similar to playing music at high volumes through a mixer if that makes sense. After hearing the 48k going untouched from the soundcard's digital out to my external dac it leaves me wanting more from my music (44.1k).

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and if there is something I may be overlooking. I would rather not resample the 44.1k to 48k with software if I can keep from it.

Does anyone have any thoughts / suggestions on the 44.1k digital output from my soundcard?

I would appreciate any thoughts or comments.
