mplayer dump problem

Following instructions from the gentoo wiki, i've done this:

mplayer dvd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile title1.vob

Supposedly, "the VOB file you just ripped will still contain all the audio/video/subtitle tracks the original DVD had." Apparently though this is not the case, as my dumped file has no subtitles available. They cannot be cycled through with 'j' during playback.

Very strangely, when running mplayer in verbose mode the lines that look like "subtitle ( sid ): 1 language: en" don't show up, but at the correct points in the movie, the lines that look like "==> Found subtitle: 2" DO show up.

Doing the following command (with any number for the sid) doesn't show any subtitles up during playback, even though they are "==> Found".

mplayer -sid 2 title1.vob

The method described in the gentoo wiki to obtain subtitles involves the 'tccat' command from the transcode package, which I don't want to install. Surely there is a way in mplayer/mencoder to dump the subtitles from the dvd?
