Hi,
I installed rhythmbox lately, when i try to play a mp3 i get the following error:
Failed to create volume element; check your installation
I have installed alsa with wiki (works perfectly), including these lines in /etc/devfsd.conf:
REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.sound 660
REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.sound 660
Yes, i did a search in the forum......
Saw that it is probably a gstreamer problem. Ran gstreamer-properties.
It says: defaultsink:
output: ESD Enlightenment Sound Daemon
pipeline: osssink
When i click on test it says:
Failed to construct test pipeline for 'ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture'
I do not have the complete gnome installed, i use XFCE
Anyone got any suggestions?

do you have the snd-pcm-oss module loaded? have you unmuted your channels?
AKA uknowme

These are the modules in rc.conf:
#
# Module to load at boot-up (in this order)
# (prefix a module with a ! to disable it)
#
MODULES=(!usbserial !ide-scsi via-rhine snd-pcm-oss snd-intel8x0 lp
parport_pc nvidia ohci-hcd quickcam raw1394
There's no problem when i play the mp3 with BMP. with the alsa-,esd- or oss-plugin.

I also get this problem
Notice that I can't find gstreamer-properties.
Using xmms is fine, and this post in the rhythmbox-devel ML seems to confirm it is gstreamer related.

Hum, I just pacman -S gstreamer (which was already up to date), and it seems like it fixed the problem.
Strange though, I expect it to come again soon.

Brice,
thanks for the tip. Reinstalling worked for me too
btw. gstreamer-properties is part of the gnome-desktop package

DIdn't work for me, though.. :-(
I have the same problems. Playing through totem (through xine) works fine.
I use alsasink in gstreamer-properties and have snd-pcm-oss build into the kernel (no module).
I've followed the directions from the wiki but I use udev. But I've set permissions accordingly. Since xine can play audio, I guess for this part everything is okay.
I don't get it - this is not my first alsa installation. :-)
Just tried pacman -S gstreamer but no change..
