Awesome WM with two displays

I'm currently running awesome on my 15.4" laptop, but I'd like to hook it up to a 17"external LCD (through the VGA out) and have a separate virtual desktop on each. But it will only be hooked up at some times. Can someone tell me how to go about doing this or point me to a howto?
