kded uses too much RAM

Hello,
When I run KDE and some usual apps on my laptop (Konversation, Konqueror, Amarok, Kopete, etc.), kded keeps asking for memory, it is using ~400 MB, 15 minutes after a reboot right now. yikes
I am using KDE 3.5.9 with weekly pacman -Syu.
It doesn't seem to get worse (well it does, but not faster) if I plug a usb drive.

Any idea? smile

Re: kded uses too much RAM

Plugging in a USB drive won't do anything to help with memory usage.  400MB seems a bit much for KDE.  When I see something like this on my boxes, I usually start by getting a base memory usage (starting out in the environment, no applications), then I start an application and watch the results.  If memory is a big issue for you, you might consider running something lighter than KDE.

How much RAM total does your system have?

Re: kded uses too much RAM

Memory is not really a concern to me, I have 2 GB. The thing is, it's not KDE that uses 400 MB of RAM, but just the kded daemon; kontact, amarok and others have their own consumptions so the total amount is pretty huge, and I just hit the 600 MB mark for kded alone.
I'm going to reboot and run my apps one by one to check if there is something triggering that behaviour.

Re: kded uses too much RAM

Are you checking the RAM that's really used or also the cached memory?

Re: kded uses too much RAM

Weird here's my memory usage after a reboot, using KDEMod, this is before and after starting CF

 [z0phi3l@z0phi3l ~]$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2025 534 1491 0 312 106
-/+ buffers/cache: 115 1910
Swap: 258 0 258
 [z0phi3l@z0phi3l ~]$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2025 609 1416 0 312 124
-/+ buffers/cache: 171 1854
Swap: 258 0 258

Re: kded uses too much RAM

Okay, kded started to screw up when I ran Kontact (no reactions from Kopete and Konversation) , asking for 0.1% more memory (so that's 2 MB) every 3 seconds approximately, and more CPU percentage as well. I ran kontact's embedded apps one by one after restarting kded, and it seems that akregator is the one responsible.

I base my numbers on top, so i guess it takes into account only resources allocated for kded and not disk cache.

Re: kded uses too much RAM

-/+ buffers/cache: 115 1910

and

-/+ buffers/cache: 171 1854

These are the numbers you should be looking at. Looks like your doing quite well in the memory department:)

*edit*, maybe I should have read your last post more clearly as you have already come to this conclusion;)

Re: kded uses too much RAM

I still have this problem sad
However I don't know if it's a bug in the daemon or akregator, or if I screwed up somewhere else. I couldn't find anyone with the same issue, which pretty strange because i guess these apps are quite mainstream.
Should I try to downgrade to KDE 3.5.8 just to check or is it a waste of time?

Needless to say, I welcome all ideas or suggestions smile
