startxfce4 fails

Hi all,

This is my first post on the Arch forums. I had wanted to try Arch for quite some time, and my recent PC build presented that opportunity. Unfortunately, some hardware problems and a lack of time due to school meant that I had to stop after the initial installation. Thanks to spring break, I can now continue with the rest of the process.

Anyway, I installed XFCE last night according to the Beginners Guide and got that working with Firefox, MPlayer, AbiWord, Gnumeric, etc. Then I went back and installed dbus and HAL, at which point the terminal window closed unexpectedly and failed to open again. I restarted the system and found that I could not start XFCE ("startxfce4") like I could before. I also noticed that pacman was not functioning but have since got it working again. The strange thing is, I was able to "startx" just after the issue appeared but cannot do that any more. That command now gives me the same error that startxfce4 does, which ends with this line:

FreeFonPath: FPE "usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

Can anyone offer suggestions? Thanks in advance.
