No one can really tell you what is best, its always a matter of personal choice.
Download and install/configure both, then decide for yourslef.
There is decent documentation for both, and apps can run on both openbox and fluxbox, e.g. pypanel and fbpanel.
Openbox has less transparency effects (by default) than fluxbox, editing openbox files is very similar to editing html files, and the fluxbox menu's and init files have their own syntax.

Perhaps an old thread, but could help some.
Fluxbox:
*Does some initial configuring of your conf files so you have your programs in the meny etc.
*Configuring is easy with prgms but somewhat shattered.
*Comes with a panel thats easy to configure. The fluxbox themes also automatically theme the panel, making it fit in nicely.
*Resizing windows are'nt as natural as I would like (only bottom handle change size)
Openbox:
*Comes with almost blank configurefiles. Copy the defaults to your homedirectory to modify them. 3 files: menu, autostart and rc. And they are easy to understand.
*Install obconf and openbox is easely configured.
*Does'nt have a panel so you need to install one, and theme it to fit your desktop.
*Naturall interface, feels more slim and natural.

configuration via the config files is also dead easy for flux. And im sure you can configure the handles... and im very sure it supports alt-right click.
Though I prefer OB now... long way from the time when I use to use flux exclusively. Flux has got to be one of the slowest developed wm's.

Like they say, its all about taste
I also use OB, it seems more natural in some way.
But FB themes can have pictures as backround (buttons for example). It's somewhat more estetic than OB. So I run FB on my girlfriends computer

The main differences between fluxbox and openbox:
- Fluxbox' configuration files are somewhat easier to understand and modify (Openbox' are still really easy)
- Fluxbox uses its own toolbar (Where in openbox you can use one of the many others such as tint, visibility, fbpanel, etc.)
- Fluxbox is able to use tabs (I've always turned them off as soon as I installed it)
- Fluxbox can use icons in its right-click menu (Again, never used 'em.)
- Openbox is a tiny bit faster, but if you're on a system that's anywhere near modern you won't really notice the difference.
Hope this helps you out

Openbox... is the way to go ...

Both of them are great window managers in their own right (i used both of them 2.5 years at least) but here's my rundown between them.
Fluxbox
* interesting customizability options
* fast window management
* built-in slit/taskbar
Openbox
* nice clean design
* adherence to netwm
* customizable with small external apps
Hope this helps :-)

So i used fluxbox for one year before i switched to openbox.
In the first week with opebox i don't find the right differences between them......... ok the other configuration files and some small things, but i mean the real differences.
But if you used openbox longer you find out that is really clean and slack to use.

One thing I like a lot in openbox is that it has nice key bindings by default. Like, if you press <ctrl>+<alt>+→, you'll go to the desktop to the right. If you press <shift>+<alt>+←, you'll move the active window to the desktop to the left, etc.

I can only talk about Openbox - because that is my beloved WM.
I like it's simplicity. No panel no nothing - only if I want.
I like the xml-configuration files and I modded (keybindings) it to my total command. I use the rootmenu only to "exit".
I love openbox!

I hear ya... I love the keybindings too (although I'm sure it's just as easy in fluxbox.)
I have a menu filled with every possible power management command, but I also bind the following:
Shutdown C+A+S+End
Reboot C+A+S+Del
Logout C+A+S+l
Suspend Fn+Esc
Hibernate Fn+F1
openbox --reconfigure C+A+r (I do a lot of theming which requires a quick refresh of the desktop)

I use Fluxbox almost exclusively. I have dabbled in Openbox (and WindowMaker, IceWM, etc.) but I always come back to Fluxbox. I'm planning to spend more time with Openbox at some point, but it's not at the top of my TODO list right now.
The manpages for fluxbox and fluxstyle are worth reading.
There are some good guides on the Fluxbox wiki:
Keyboard shortcuts are very easy to setup (in the ~/.fluxbox/keys file). In fact, the syntax of all the Fluxbox configuration files is straightforward.

hmm, i am using flux, its 1 mb of ram, and i have only 256, but its quite ugly, even themed, and ob looks more organic, so i will give it try for a second time, but it was using 6 or 7 mb RAM
best way to choose is to try both of em

When I'm not using E17 I tend to prefer openbox. It seems cleaner to me than flux, IMO.

Fluxbox also has the brilliant tabbed windows feature.

Fluxbox has uglier themes which brings memories of the mid-90's. Goes well with a Captain Planet t-shirt and a mini-truck with the neon-pastel pink and green words that proudly say "Sport".

earlier i used fluxbox, then openbox, now - pekwm. Install both and decide for yourself.

For those who use a panel in openbox; which do you recommend?

I use pypanel.
But there are many others. You should try some and see what you like.
If you don't know all the different panels have a look at the OB Wiki page.

I wanted badly to use pekwm, but I was never able to change the theme.

The font rendering of pekwm is not that good. The window titles just look ugly compared to openbox or fluxbox. Also, it does not feel as SMOOTH as openbox. Otherwise, a rather nice wm.

Fluxbox it's a little bit easier, and it rule only for its vanilla transparency and for its toolbar, though openbox it's nicer, lightweighter and just better for me ...
