Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Is it an idea to provide every topic with a button to flag it [SOLVED]?
I know you could edit the original post title if you are the original author, but many people still seem to forget/not know about this option.
If this is done in future there can be a possibility to search (more accurate) for solved/unsolved topics.

Opinions?

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

I like this idea as it would save me some time.  However, allowing anybody to flag something as solved would be open to abuse.  An innocent example, one person could think it solved while the original submitter does not.  I could see more malicious occurrences too, even though this forum is quite good as far as thing like that go.

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

An easy solution would be to mention officious tags in the 'rules' sticky. (or is it called 'asking smart questions'?)
Only the thread starter can change the title.
When searching, you can include tags in your search string to filter results.

example query: '[solved] flash'.

This already works without having to change anything.

Maybe I'm just lazy? I tend to rely on the power of search engines. Screw organizing and tagging. Communicate info in human-readable text, and some search engine based on keywords entered by humans will be able to find it : o ).

solved flag is indeed great enough practice to warrant its own button imho.

Also ability to sort unsolved posts would also be handy for the helping kind of ppl.

Maybe this is a good start: http://www.punres.org/desc.php?pid=343
Don't know who is allowed to tag topics though, nor if it works for the specific arch forum version. Anyone willing to test this?

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Just to give my voice. I second the idea of a "solved" button. I already mark my threads when I solve my issues, but having a button is an incentive for people to use it. Just make it evident and *flashy* big_smile

You could hang a name on the tagger so that everybody would know who flagged it to be solved/(unsolved again) and malicious users can be banned.
But let's stick with the original user first.
Isn't the idea of a button instead of having to edit your orinial post-title simpler and better (in the end)?
I think more people would actually make use of it.
For beginners it becomes more obvious that/how one should flag a topic solved plus it's easier to have a search for (earlier solutions to) your question before you post it (again and again)...
For more expirienced users it is allways nice to know an anwer solved a problem or topics still need (your) help.

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

You are right.  Only let the topic starter have the ability to mark a thread as solved.

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

You could also let any user use the solved button, but the original poster should then be informed by mail to 'unlock' the solved tag.

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Well coming from Ubuntu, their forums have the solved button availible to the original poster only. It seems to work very well that way. I know when I first came to Arch, It took a little more thought to mark a thread solved.. Not much more, but more nevertheless.

This is something that I suggested about 2 years ago, but dtw basically said it wasn't going to happen, so I dropped it:

Hmm you're right (the colour convinced me). A button is not complicated to implement and saves a few human steps. What could be the harm? I now support your idea!

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Would also be nice since then the [SOLVED] tag would always be on the same side of the topic title. At the moment is very messy with some people putting it on the left, others on the right, some use uppercase and some use lowercase.

Re: Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Wait.  Where is this button you speak of?  Have been looking all over for it and nothing seems to have changed!  So why, then, is this thread marked 'solved' ??

Oh, the irony!! ;-p
