With pidgin I can play a sound in the preferences if I click test but during a conversation I get nothing. What could cause that?

I had this problem too. Solved it with "aplay %s" in sound comand.

I just tried that, test still works but nothing in the conversations. It just worked for starting a conversation, but nothing more.

I was reading around and I guess it uses gstreamer to play it's sounds now, but I already installed gstreamer-plugins. Would it have missed one?

I just ran it in a terminal, it does not even say a sound is being played. However, if I were to type something, close the window, and that person say something opening a new window it plays a sound and the terminal says so.

Further study shows that it'll play sounds if the window does not have focus.

Now don't all yell at me at once, there is appearently a setting that says "sounds when conversation has focus" that I needed to check. I swear that wasn't there last time I used pidgin.
