Cannot open display:0.0

Hello everybody

I installed Archlinux (64bit) on my system a few days ago, installation went pretty smooth. (I followed the beginnersguide)
But I have been struggling with a problem ever since.

I installed firefox but when I want to launch it I get following error:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

If I then use export DISPLAY=:0.0 (as mentioned is some solutions I found) the error changes to:
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:0.0

When I try the to launch kile I get: "kile: cannot connect to X server".

Strange thing is that running a gui using startx works perfect, I tested with Xterm, gnome and fluxbox.

The drivers for my nvidia video card are installed properly and Arch is fully up to date.

I searched google and these forums for a solution but non of the proposed solutions worked for me.

Anyone that can help me with this?

Thanks in advance

Re: Cannot open display:0.0

I'm not sure if I understand correctly what you are doing, but you need to start a xserver (so using startx, a display manager, etc) before you can start any gui applications.

Re: Cannot open display:0.0

Yeah I should have realized that myself. I had a miscommunication with a friend of me which caused this stupid misunderstanding. Thanks anyway.
