Problems With X

I can't wait to get this system up and running. I followed the beginners guide and so far so good... until I get to the X part.

I install xorg and the gang. I get X to start up with xterm very nicely. Here's the first problem. When I hit ctrl+alt+backspace to stop X, it goes to a fully black screen for about two seconds and my monitor goes into sleep mode. No console, nothing. Pressing the (ctrl+)alt+F keys does nothing. I have to reboot with ctrl+alt+del. I am unable to get back to my console.

Second problem: I set up my users, installed ALSA (works well, phew!) and installed gnome and gnome-extra along with gdm, fam and hal. I added those three daemons to /etc/rc.conf and rebooted. When I restarted, my system was trying to start gdm but it popped up a dialog box saying "the greeter application crashed, attempting to use a different one" or something like that.

Yeah, it could be the open ATI drivers. I'll try the catalyst drivers.

Ok, I tried the catalyst drivers and they're working very nicely. Now I can actually kill X and return to the terminal. However, GDM is still giving me that problem. I really need  GDM, lol. I don't know why GDM keeps crashing and is unable to start up. It's very irritating.
