My X dies sometimes...

Sometimes I'll just be doing something and my screen goes black and blinks a few times, then stays on and black. What gives? What logs can I check for errors in this case?

Re: My X dies sometimes...

First off, what graphics card and driver are you using?

Re: My X dies sometimes...

Check:
~/.xsession-errors
/var/log/everything.log (or whatever your log file is)
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Re: My X dies sometimes...

I don't find anything that really stands out as errors in those files...

Should I just power-off the computer next time it happens and boot into Ubuntu to check those files in Arch, incase they get overwritten during bootup or something?

Also, I'm not sure what driver I'm using; I forgot. I have some kind of intel chip. Here's my Xorg:

Re: My X dies sometimes...

Actually, there are quite a few warnings in the Xorg.0.log:

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.
See http://wiki.x.org/wiki/GitPage for git access instructions.

Re: My X dies sometimes...

Hmm, my X dies (and I need to reboot to get the things working) because of the new intel driver.
I'm now using the driver 2.1.1 and it doesn't dies. Perhaps it is happening with you too.

Re: My X dies sometimes...

Very possible.

How do you go about installing 2.2.1?

Re: My X dies sometimes...

The intel driver is buggy lately. You may also want to try using xf86-video-i810 instead.

Re: My X dies sometimes...

I installed the i810 driver, but my screen looks pretty bad now. Everything is blurry and it's pretty bothersome to look at. How can I tweak this?

Alex; I'm sorry to say that I don't know what you mean by you've modified the pkgbuild. Can you be more explicit with me?

Re: My X dies sometimes...

The pkgbuild had some patches (for the new version), I just removed them from the pkgbuild. Nothing else. wink
