VLC - no sound for WMA files

Hi all,

I've searched long and hard for a solution to my issue but I'm at a loss.

VLC will play the video from a wma file fine but won't play any sound.

Message from VLC is:

main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `wmap'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I've looked through all the packages for what might be required but I'm not sure. I'm on x86-64 so perhaps this is related.

Appreciate whatever guidance you can provide.

Thanks for your help,
Nick

Did you installed the codecs package : http://www.archlinux.org/packages/13071/ ?

Re: VLC - no sound for WMA files

Ok, this is bad news because VLC is known to read anything !

Here are a few points to check :

- Does your wma contains any DRM ? If you got it from a music salling web site (Amazon, Virgin or other), or somebody's MP3 player, it might contains a DRM and you are stuck. In such a case you will have to look at google or forums to see how to crack the DRM on Linux. It might be ilegal in your country and I do not approve such a thing. At your own risks ...

- Do you know if your wma plays well on Windows with Windows Media Player for instance ?
- Do you know if your wma plays well on an other linux platform (other Arch, Ubuntu, ...) ? If so good news, we will find the solution smile

- Try to read it with mplayer who is also known to read anything ...

- As a last solution, if you manage to put your wma somewhere on the net I can try it on my Arch install where I have succeeded in reading anything for the moment, but a DRMised wma ...

Re: VLC - no sound for WMA files

Mplayer tells me that it can't find the codec. I think this might be to do with wm9 codecs being no good with 64 bit. Which leaves me in a predicament.

Edit:
Should have added that I'll try it on Windows today but it's a newly downloaded file so I haven't tried it on other platforms. I've also downloaded a non-DRM video from the Microsoft site (a trailer) and I'm having the same issues.

That's the conclusion reached here:

Re: VLC - no sound for WMA files

There are still some WMA/WMV formats that are unsupported, period, on VLC. - You may have better luck on Mplayer... but keep in mind that closed formats are just that closed, it takes a while for them to be ported to free systems.
