Laptop backlight problem

Recently I've been having a problem with my laptop screen. When I try to make it brighter, it stays like that for a few seconds then goes back to how light it was before. Maybe it's a problem with KDE4? Or a hardware problem?

Re: Laptop backlight problem

Is there some sort of option for dimming the screen when idle? I think I remember something like that for gnome, but don't know about kde. Maybe disabling that might make some sort of difference. I would put my money on it being a software issue rather than hardware. On batteries at all? Maybe running from mains without the battery even slotted in might fix it.

Re: Laptop backlight problem

Power management for the screen is off... at the moment I'm running from the mains.

EDIT: This is really weird. It's like the screen is stuck in the middle. If I pull out the power, the screen goes darker, like it should do, and then it goes to the middle. If I put the power back in, the screen goes lighter, then goes back to the middle. Huh?

Re: Laptop backlight problem

When you say you are pulling out the power, I presume that your battery is still slotted in. Try taking the battery out completely.

In some laptops, sometimes when the battery isn't full, even though you are running from mains the screen can be dimmed from either the software or possibly BIOS level.
