boot loader

i need help
trying to install Arch on laptop
dell inspiron 5150
i get  as far as cofigure bootloader
i tried lilo & grub both
when i get into configure bootloader
& while in text mode i cannot seem to get out
on lilo you have some notes at bottom of screen like

^G= help  ^X= exit

but whe i type "^G" then hit enter
i get nothing same result with any commands
i cant seem to get out so i poweroff
start machine it just goes right back to windows
i even wiped out windows to let arch have all the hard drive
get nothing
i really want to checkout Arch
please help

Its not that you type that you hit crtl+the letter so crtl+x or crtl+g..

it sounds like you're using nano, so just hit ctrl-X to exit. the defaults should enable you to boot. then just make sure to install the bootloader before exiting the setup program (#6 on the menu).

i got it to boot
now to try to figure out how to get into gui
startx is giving me grief

did you install kde or gnome of flux or something if so then do xf86config unless you installed xorg then xorgconfig

ok i believe im almost there
i still cant get startx up yet
i get a message

cannot open /dev/mouse
no such file or directory.
(EE) Mouse1: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse1"

if i need to post more info let me know

if it makes a dif
this is a laptop with a touchscreen 
i ran xf86config & tried default & ps2
im almost ready to give up here
the only thing thats keeping from doing so is
mt stubborness & ego <cant let a pc beat me<

edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config. Change the line that says /dev/mouse to something that exists on your filesystem. /dev/input/mice is usually a good bet. Or search the forum for some example configs.

i just reinstalled went with basic
can i get into a gui from here?

i think i need to be led by hand
if you got the time to bother
i thought i had a fair knowledge to get this to work but i guess not

ok
i downloaded the live cd
tried it on my laptop dell inspiro5150
will not load
Hwd not found
when i just hit enter it starts but then just goes to black screen

but on my home machine it loads just fine
only prob it doesnt connect through my cable modem

could this be my problem running it on my laptop???

hey hey hey
finally got some progress
i reinstalled mandrake copied the xfree86 from there
installed arch then edited xfree with what i had from mdk
now im in graphical
that  dev/input/mice i needed also
