Which ATI Driver?

This is my video card: (integrated on the motherboard)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]

Should I use the open source driver or the proprietary drivers?

Re: Which ATI Driver?

That depends on what you want to do,
I'd say if you need 3D acceleration go for the proprietary driver otherwise use the open source driver.

In which situation would using the open driver be advantageous?

In the situation that you happen to prefer using open source alternatives (which I try my hardest to promote wink), and despise the proprietary (i.e. me big_smile).

Also, it appears AMD are going to be releasing open source drivers anyway (edit: i'm not entirely sure about the truth of this): http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?si … 13/1659245

Re: Which ATI Driver?

I just saw that your card is not supported by the xf86-video-ati which I was talking about,
in your case it would be xf86-video-radeonhd I guess.

What about the proprietary driver?

Go for the proprietary it beats the open drivers by half in every aspect. (performance, video, maybe even powersaving?)
You can check ati/amd site or phoronix for compatibility reports.

I'm using the proprietary drivers right now but xcompmgr is still laging badly with simple shadow effects.

Re: Which ATI Driver?

What about the new free drivers that support AIGLX? They are fast as an nVidia card!
