Interesting, I used this and lost all my /home directories.  (Test box, so no big deal)

Not sure if I left something out, a simple glitch, or what. 

Also, the patch for rc.conf failed, had to do it manually.

Note that neither of these are complaints, just comments.  As I wiped out /home on that I think I'll just do a fresh install, and put in udev before doing anything else.

EDITED an hour later

Did what I said I would, reinstalled, changed to udev right away, and everything is fine.

Tried that...worked fine (booted and so on).

But when I try to insert an usb memorystick no devices are created in /dev
(I know that i must add rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules, i found some examples on google, but nothing works..

Tried to start hotplug but it complains

... can't load module shpchp
missing kernel or user mode driver shpchp 

Trying modprobe :

$ modprobe shpchp
FATAL: Error inserting shpchp (/lib/modules/2.6.7/kernel/drivers/pci/hotplug/shpchp.ko): Operation not permitted

It's a stock ide kernel...Any ideas?

$ uname -a
Linux torindan 2.6.7 #1 SMP Wed Jun 16 07:04:51 PDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux

Don't know how...but it worked (after a reboot), now I can use my stick as /dev/sda1 (will play later how to give "nice" names to devises)

But now I saw that I'm missing all /dev/snd/ and /dev/sound/

hotplug still not working thith same stupid error "can't load module shpchp" but

$ ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.7/kernel/drivers/pci/hotplug/shpchp.ko
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 123424 Jun 16 17:08 /lib/modules/2.6.7/kernel/drivers/pci/hotplug/shpchp.ko

If I have installed udev with your ABS package, can I upgrade with arch official package?
I just syued and pacman wanted to upgrade udev. I didn't do it.

The current udev package will work when upgraded from mine.  You'll probably want to verify that your rules and permissions are still good.

My package is now depreciated.

It worked perfectly!
As you said it overwrite the old conf files but it's just to edit a few lines.

Edit: Does this package contain the migrate to udev stuff?
The patches and the migrate-udev script.
If it does I can change the howto.

Edit2: I included the official package in the howto.

Thanks very much for posting those, lanrat.  I have remained ignorant about this whole devfs / udev issue, and in the dark about why many Archers have been pushing for udev.  These docs were enlightening, and unlike other reading on this topic I had explored briefly before now, not completely over my head.

Being a "path of least resistance / if it ain't broke..." kind-of computer user (with relatively simple needs), I think I'll leave well enough alone for now.  But at least I have a clue about why I might want to switch to udev down the road.

I followed the news, installed udev, edited grub's menu.lst and booted [code] alsactl set_control:892: bad control.33.value type[code]
It also did a respawning too fast, sleep 5 minutes

There were a couple of things it did not like along the way, to do with gpm & not finding /dev/psaux or something.

celery 1.9
1G ram
via chipset
onboard sound & nic.

Should I try as per the bear formula ?
