Yes of course. Installed the ms fonts and all. Still ugly.

We've got about 500 screenshots (maybe more) in the monthly screenshots threads.  Have a look through any of those and find a font style you actually like.  I can then offer some config advice for ya.  The thing about fonts is that its different strokes for different folks.  Some like'em a little fuzzy and others *hate* antialiased fonts.  If you can show your preference, someone can help.

I like anti-aliasing set to "slight" in Gnome.dpi is 96 see my screenshots and gnome settings :-

and I use a "nvidia" gfx card and have below lines in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf section "device" :

Option          "DPI"   "96 x 96"
