Installation problems :S

Hi!

I m trying to install arch, but i ve run into some problems.I m using a laptop with p4 @3g, 512ram, 60gb ide.
I ve tried following the guide. 3 partitions, sda1,2,3 -2 is swap-, 3 home , 1 is / (boot i guess?)

So, at the final step of Grub installation, i add the vga lines ( kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda3 ro vga=792). Is this correct?
I use alt+F1/2/3/4 and type /arch/setup again to continue. is this the right way?

After that....chaos.

I have no experience with linux, so, any help will be much appreciated!

Re: Installation problems :S

I presume you've got to around this stage of the beginners guide: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … Guide#GRUB

You'll want to reboot instead of typing /arch/setup

Oh and welcome to arch! Good luck cool

Re: Installation problems :S

the problem is, 1) is the grub line correct? is it hda or sda ?:S:S
2)i dont know how to save settings and go on with the installation of grub -it says in order to install it i must configure something-

moreover ,the closest i got to an installation, it "boots" but gives error regarding /dev/sda1 (failed to parse block device name)unable to create/detect root device stuff ...i have no idea.

Finally, at the boot screen it has 2 options

Arch Linux
Arch Linux Fallback root

Re: Installation problems :S

Try changing hda to sda -- arch uses /dev/sd?? notation even for IDE drives.

Not quite sure I understand you here? You've configured the grub file to change the kernel line and add the vga bit, so once you save your changes and go back to the previous screen (/etc/rc.conf, root-password, pacman mirrors, etc) its done and all you need to do is reboot.

And yes, fwojciec is right. I'd go for sda1 instead of sda3 though, as it should point to your root (/) dir not your home dir.

Re: Installation problems :S

Are you using vim or nano to edit the files? You would have had to save the other files (like /etc/rc.conf) so I presume you haven't changed them at all - that might be a bad idea.

For vim, to save you press colon, w, q :

:wq

For nano the instructions should be on the screen.

Re: Installation problems :S

Yep -- if menu.lst is the first and only file you're editing during installation then the only thing I can recommend is to start over, this time by following the Beginner's Guide during installation, and to go through the process properly by editing all the necessary files along the way.  You will save yourself a lot of problems in the long run that way.

Re: Installation problems :S

You _did_ select vim when the installer asks which text editor to use right? (I'm guessing you're not using nano because IIRC the instructions on how to save should be shown on the screen anyway).

If you are using vim, press Escape a few times, then press the colon button (:), then the 'w' button, then the 'q' button. These characters should appear in the status bar at the bottom. Now press enter.

Done.

[edit: you may want to search for vim in the wiki. great instructions there.]

sda usually. That is your MBR.

No it's fine. GRUB installs to the MBR, then uses the root partition (sda1) specified in /etc/rc.conf

Re: Installation problems :S

I'd like to take this moment to warn you that Arch isn't a distribution aimed at new users. Something like Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora would be more suited to such a user, as things are a lot easier to understand/configure. Having said that, if you wish to perservere, then be prepared to do a lot of reading. Most on this forum won't want to do too much hand-holding.

I suggest you take a good look at the links here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=4016
and search on google for "linux what is root user" and "linux guides".

That should get you started smile
