Grub error 17

Hi

Let me first say that I do realize that there are a bunch of topics on this subject, and I did search. However, I still can't seem to get it working. I have the following setup:

One 500GB SATA harddrive. On it, there are 4 primary partitions, sda1, 2, 3, 4.

sda1 = Windows Vista (50GB).
sda2 = Linux Ext3 root (45GB).
sda3 = NTFS (some random large size leftover from when the others were created).
sda4 = Linux Swap (5ish GB).

I installed grub. I selected sda when asked. Grub loads, so I assume it's been installed to MBR as it should be. My menu.lst looks like this:

# Config file for GRUB - The GNU GRand Unified Bootloader
# /boot/grub/menu.lst

# DEVICE NAME CONVERSIONS
#
#  Linux           Grub
# -------------------------
#  /dev/fd0        (fd0)
#  /dev/hda        (hd0)
#  /dev/hdb2       (hd1,1)
#  /dev/hda3       (hd0,2)
#

#  FRAMEBUFFER RESOLUTION SETTINGS
#     +-------------------------------------------------+
#          | 640x480    800x600    1024x768   1280x1024
#      ----+--------------------------------------------
#      256 | 0x301=769  0x303=771  0x305=773   0x307=775

#      16M | 0x312=786  0x315=789  0x318=792   0x31B=795
#     +-------------------------------------------------+

# general configuration:

color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue

# boot sections follow
# each is implicitly numbered from 0 in the order of appearance below
#
# TIP: If you want a 1024x768 framebuffer, add "vga=773" to your kernel line.
#

# (1) Windows

Are you able to spot any obvious errors in the above file, that I am overlooking? If not, what else could be wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Grub error 17

Hi.
Your menu.lst looks ok to me.  Chroot into your arch install as described here http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Panics, and have a look at your /etc/fstab.  Are the partitions set up as you intended?  Do the first parts of the sda2 and 4 lines look like this:
/dev/sda2  /        ext3
/dev/sda4  swap  swap
?

Here's a wiki article on fstab:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab.

Re: Grub error 17

My fstab was as it should be, as were the partitions. Still haven't figured out what could be wrong, but I did solve the problem by simply using LILO instead. Although I've already managed to forget to run lilo after updating config file at least twice tongue

Thanks for your help smile
