I would like to set up a MythTV box with my old box as it's starting to collect dust. I am going to buy a TV capture card soon. What I'd ideally like is my headless box being the backend, and I can use my current box as the frontend to set recordings and all that. Few questions:
1) To where does captured video go? On a drive on the backend box or can I capture to an external drive as well?
2) Is one able to set quality settings for capture or is this dependent on the capture card?
Also, I read that the Hauppauge cards are ideal, which one(s) would be recommended from here: http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module … g&catID=71
TIA for any help folks

I haven't done this myself yet, but I'm in the process.
From my reading the Hauppauge pvr-150/250/350 are the ones that work the best. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
What are the specs of your soon to be myth-tv box?

i have Hauppauge pvr-550 & im happy with it
my setup is a standalone hooked up to tv it does not connect to net or other boxes
so the same machine is front & backend
if you havent done so check the wiki

Thank you dunc4n The box specs are P4 3.4ghz EE, 1.2gb ram, 7600gs 512mb, 500gb HD. I am going to buy a PVR 150 w/remote by the weekend.
rayjgu3, I like that idea a lot! So can you browse the entire mythtv interface on your TV? Play, load, record, etc. just like that? I would love to have my current box and my TV be frontends, is that possible?
Offline
well my tv is an lcd hdtv . it has a vga input for pc as well as lots of other inputs
yes i can browse through every thing on the drive via wireless keyboard w/ touchpad, its a computer thats tv capable
ive not setup mythtv to have a backend on one box & front end with another. i havent even tried it.
that hasnt been something that i wanted to do. i wanted a stand alone box.
it can record video like any dvr. my card has fm radio reciever so i can record radio as well
i set it up to replace many components, dvd/cd player stereo/radio, i also closeted my cassette deck, phonograph, & vcr connecting them on rare occasion.

That's a very good setup rayjgu3, sounds fantastic for your situation. That's why I love the idea so much, that one can set up the same result in so many ways.
I have a question about TV listings. This is built-in to Myth from what I have read on the Wiki, but I am in Canada. Is it possible to get listings still? I use tvlistings.zap2it.com all the time and get listings for my area just fine, curious if Myth has support for international. I assume so, but I'm wondering if it's something separate/extra I must do or if it's built-in.

Well - I have an PVR-500 in my Backend server in the Garage, where I set all my incommings signals to enter the House, and from there MythTV takes over using the LAN in the house, so wether I'm in the kitchen,bedroom, the kids room or in the livingroom I can choose anything that haves something to do with Music, VIdeo, TV or Phones etc.
For that Matter I've been using NFS to share from the Backend, and automaticly mount it on the frontends. Therefor it only the Backend that controls the thing and also using Mythweb from the outside to manage my MythTV setup.
This is a really great setup for me - and even my family can handle the management of the system good and easily.
So I'll looking really forward to get 0.21 in the package repos, caurse this will hopefully makes the last errors in mythweb controlable.
Just getting better .... All the time

Peque that sounds awesome! It's really amazing what can be done these days.
I just bought my PVR-150 w/remote. I will be building my system this weekend hopefully should I have the time, can't wait
Question: Is all video captured in 4:3 for you guys? Is there a way to capture it in 16:9/16:10 in the myth setup?

Peque could you share your complete specifications of both front and backends?
The one problem with myth setups in the hardware, I would like to mirrow what you have done if/when i would build one for myself.
Thanks,

Hey guys, can you help me get my remote working? I am going to install Myth tomorrow on my other box, but am trying to get the remote to work on my main box here (which will be the frontend). I've tried this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lirc but when I try
irw
It just sits there, no output. It's not recognizing my button presses. The remote receiver/blaster is lighting up just fine when I hit buttons, though. This is dmesg output when I plugged it in to USB:
usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
lirc_mceusb2: Philips eHome USB IR Transciever and Microsoft MCE 2005 Remote Control driver for LIRC $Revision: 1.29 $
lirc_mceusb2: Daniel Melander <lirc@rajidae.se>, Martin Blatter <martin_a_blatter@yahoo.com>
usb 3-2: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin: sample_rate: 0
lirc_mceusb2[2]: Topseed eHome Infrared Transceiver on usb3:2
usbcore: registered new interface driver lirc_mceusb2
So it's recognized fine. Any help getting it to work and be usable with vlc, xine, etc.?

It looks like your hardware is working properly, otherwise irw will exit right away.
Did you already make an /etc/lircd.conf file (where codes are associated with buttons) with irrecord? You said that you followed the wiki, so you've probably already done this...
Offline
Sash, yes, I have. I grabbed 2 lircd.conf's from lirc.org, have one for the MCE USB right now, the pic in the folder on lirc.org was my exact remote, only grey. I just tried this:
irrecord -d /dev/lirc0 /tmp/my_remote
And it recognizes every button. I just need lirc working with everything else now, hehe...

I also had some trouble setting up lircd. Mainly, it was because lirc was looking for /dev stuff in the wrong place. I can't remember how I fixed it and I'd post it here, but my wireless for my mythtv box is not working (stupid ndiswrapper and dropped connections). As soon as I get it fixed I'll post what I did to fix it. You might want to look here also http://gentoo-wiki.com/Lirc for some tips.
Good luck

Okay, I got it working and I will share how to the best of my ability for anyone else.
First I ran
irrecord -d /dev/lirc0 ~/Desktop/myremote
I carefully entered each and every button, then I copied this file to my /etc/lircd.conf:
sudo cp ~/Desktop/myremote /etc/lircd.conf
Restart the lirc daemon
sudo /etc/rc.d/lircd restart
And then I made a .lircrc in my /home/user, to test with Xine:
xine --keymap=lirc>.lircrc
I then edited the default settings in this file. Here's an example of what the Play config in this file was default and then what I changed it to:
# start playback
begin
remote = xxxxx
button = xxxxx
prog = xine
repeat = 0
config = Play
end
# start playback
begin
# # remote = xxxxx
button = Play
prog = xine
repeat = 0
config = Play
end
Most is from the Arch wiki I linked to in my post a bit above, the .lircrc part is from the Mythtv docs. Hope it helps!!

Whew, after a few hours of tinkering and plenty of reading on mythtv.org, I got my Myth setup going! Man this is too amazing, Myth is just so cool!
I've gotten the Mythvideo, dvd, news, weather, etc. plugins to work but I can't get Mythmusic or Mythbrowser to launch, I keep running into this error:
/usr/bin/mythbrowser: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
and
2008-04-02 10:57:50.453 MythPlugin::Init() dlerror: libGL.so.1.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
2008-04-02 10:57:50.453 Unable to initialize plugin 'mythmusic'.
2008-04-02 10:57:50.453 Unable to run plugin 'mythmusic': not initialized
How can I fix that?

Okay, found it: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 97#p328197
Echo's post is it. I didn't need to make anything executable as Echo posted, though. Just the link.
