VCs gone awol

Over the past few days I have been getting 60+ error lines when booting just prior to "Loading keyboard map", here's the last one (0 to 63 I assume)

/etc/rc.sysinit : line 396: /dev/vc/63: No such file or directory

There is no vc directory in /dev and I can no longer do a CTL-ALT-2 to open a text console. I'm not sure if it coincided with a udev update (which broke scanner permissions if scanner not connected prior to boot). No improvement booting with the fallback image.

In /dev I've got nodes in the "tty" group for tty, tty1 .. 63 (tty0 and tty7 are in the root group), vcs, vcs7, vcsa and vcsa7

So, where have my VCs gone? I've looked behind the fridge.:(
