Reiser4

Hi,

I'm changing my hd, and since i'm gonna have to reinstall everything, i decided to give arch linux a try due to some good reviews i read about it. Pacman seems very interesting, as well as the general distro idea. I'm tradicionaly a Slackware user.
Anyways, i was wondering, is there any way to install arch on a reiser4 filesystem with 2.6 kernel? I want to try reiser4, and this seems a good time to do so.
      Any ideas?

Re: Reiser4

i don't know anything about reiser4. if it requires a different set of tools than what is in the arch base subset then it could be difficult. the 2.6 kernel should not be too much trouble as long as you take a look at what other users needed to do to get it working. likely both are something to deal with AFTER an initial install.

but i am really only guessing. like i say review some of the kernel compiling threads here and read up on what reiser4 needs and you should be able to get it all going.

Re: Reiser4

I would think that the hardest part would be formating the partition(s) as Reiser4.  Kernel 2.6.4 with the ck patch applied has an option for Reiser4, so that shouldn't be an issue.  Maybe figure out a way to format it with Reiser4 and then work around the Arch Installer's format section and then install the vanilla 2.6.4 and the ck patch?

Re: Reiser4

Keep in mind that the current Reiser4 isn't stable yet, the most annoying thing is that you can't remount reiser4 partitiones yet, and that's very annoying if you use it as your root fs and you want to remount it rw instead of ro. All the Reiser4 tools can be found at www.namesys.com.

What I would do is a very minimal default Arch install on a tiny ext2 partition, then configure everything for reiser4 and make a custom kernel. Make the reiser4 fs and copy everything to the new reiser4 partition. Then reboot to your reiser4 fs. If something doesn't work go back to the ext2 fs, mount the reiser4 partition from there and fix the problem.

There are plenty of alternatives of course, perhaps the easiest is to make a seperate ext2/3 partition for the root fs, and use reiser4 for /opt, /usr and /var. That's very easy to do and you bypass the no remount problem.

Re: Reiser4

for sure you can't use standard archlinux setup. It is not abel to handle reiser4. It is not enought to format the partitions and the setup with arch cd.
I think you should use a custom kernel to boot the system and do all the steps that normaly the CD is doing by hand.
Mounting the partition, copy and install athe package,  configure rc.local, modprobe.conf, hosts etc.etc.. install a boot loader, for sure you can't relay on archsetup

Re: Reiser4

They plan to release Reiser4 within a few weeks (but that happened before). The "problem" is that they want to be really sure that Reiser4 is stable and the fastest when they release it. Also they must keep up with the kernel development. People already use it for months though.

Making an Arch installer with Reiser4 support should be easy.

Re: Reiser4

There is no convertor yet, so you need to copy all files for now. Download the needed stuff from www.namesys.com.

Re: Reiser4

You could try a daily snapshot, but I think those apply against -mm. The official snapshot is rather old now.

Re: Reiser4

i haven't had much luck with the official patches since kernel 2.6.4.  nowadays i use the love sources patch (being an ex-gentoo user).  just go to http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php? … ht=reiser4 .  love sources have been a bit rocky, but if you're willing to use reiser4, you should be comfortable with them.  personally, i use the lokean sources, available at http://www.stijlstek.nl/lokean/2004-05/ … s266r1.php , and i haven't had any trouble with them.  i've also placed a PKGBUILD for reiser4progs at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … ht=reiser4 .  that should get you started and hopefully you don't blow yourself up  big_smile .  good luck
