I've been going nuts over the fact that xterm and urxvt only uses the primary copy (selected text is copied to primary), since its like rolling a dice every time you try to paste it when switching to other apps.
Is there a patch or configure option that makes (preferably) xterm to copy selected text also to the clipboard (and hence not being flushed by mistake)?
If not, all suggestions on low-memory terminals supporting clipboard copy is welcome. (and few dependencies)

I ended up switching to Terminal for that exact reason that you laid out. I loved xterm for its speed and simplicity, but the cut and paste thing was really not working out for me. Terminal may be a bit high on dependencies for your taste though.

I'm pretty sure that you can cook up something with urxvt and its perl extension - but I don't understand perl and wasn't able to google up something useful yet.
EDIT: 'man urxvtperl' seems useful

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

autocutsel does the job, thanks for the tips
But I still, if you have any more suggestions, I love to hear about them

I think all VTE based terminals have clipboard support (sakura, xfce terminal, gnome-terminal, and some others (not sure what they are called)

I always just highlight the text and press the middle mouse button. Seems to work in everything.

On Sakura I just right-click "copy", and then ctrl+v in firefox for exemple.
So pressh must be right about VTE term
