[HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

I bought a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. I install arch on it and most thing works well except the hda-intel sound card.
The peoblem is: when a put the earphone in, there is sound in the earphone. But whenever the earphone is in or not, the speaker of my laptop never has sound.

I have used alsaconf to configure my sound card and use alsamixer to unmute all channels.
And the codecs is:

Sigmatel 9228

Please help me and sorry for my English.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

Try adding that line in /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd_hda_intel model=3stack

Then reboot. If the 3stack option doesn't work, you may also try "dell-laptop".

And if it still doesn't work, the next kernel should solve the problem anyway.

Thanks a lot!
So, is it a common problem?

I guess it is. You're not the first one I see with this problem. You will probably find other cases using google.

I have a vostro 1500 and sound doesn't work properly either. My microphone refuses to work. But it should work on your laptop, as we don't have exactly the same chipset.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

pity, I tried both two options but failed.
I also tried google and find some similar cases, some of them seem to make their sound work but their methods don't work for me.

I had this exact same problem. I solved it using the method I describe here. It's super hacky, but gets the job done.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

Hi all,

I also have a vostro 1400 (awesome laptop) but with this sound issue.  Headphones work, but not speakers.  Will the next kernel use the latest version of alsa?  And any ideas on when it will come out?

You guys (other vostro 1400 owners) want to collaborate on a vostro 1400 arch wiki entry?

Good idea!
I can provide something on the sound.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

I'm using a Dell Vostro also.

The strange thing is that I was able to get everything working yesterday by putting options snd_hda_intel model=3stack in /etc/modprobe.d/sound (which was created by alsaconf). Put it in /etc/modprobe.conf didn't work.

Today I reinstalled, and found that doing the same thing led to missing Master channel, while with some other models (e.g. 3stack-digout, laptop, auto, or leave this option out) left the built-in speaker silent. There is no way I can have the Master channel and the laptop speaker working at the same time.

Strange though that I can mute the PCM channel. But multimedia keys only seem to work with Front. Also, when the multimedia key (say volume up) is pressed, the volume can go randomly up and down, and even break the lock that binds the left and right channels.

I suspect that I am still using the wrong model after all...

----

I tried barebones' solution, and it didn't even give me PCM.

BTW, Ubuntu 8.04 beta works out of the box for me, so there really is a way to do it.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

Hi everyone,

a view days ago I've begun installing arch on my vostro 1400 and the first thing I recognized that the internal speakers weren't working.
After some research  I found this thread but the "stack3"-fix hasn't changed anything and the other workaround isn't  a solution in my opinion.
Finally I solved my problem by writing following line into the /etc/modprobe.conf:

options snd-hda-intel model=5stack

Maybe this will help some of you guys too.

Unfortunately this is no different. I can get my speaker to work, but I still have no master channel. Do you have that channel with 5stack? I suspect that other configurations are at work.

I remember having things right with Don't Panic, that is, I don't know how to use vimdiff to merge those pacnew files tongue
The current install was done via FTP, which means all my configs are up-to-date with Core Dump. So maybe Core Dump is the problem.
I'm not sure though. Please check if you have left behind any pacnews.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

I was mistaken. Reinstalled from Don't Panic disk and it's still an either-or case. I just can't get speaker and master channel at the same time. Really makes me wonder how Ubuntu does the trick.

You're right. I don't have a master channel switch too.
Have you compared the ubuntu config and the one that you use?

I have yet to compare with that from Arch, but even now I can say for sure that there's no Master for Arch.

quivler, is Arch your only OS? I came from Vista/Ubuntu dual boot and is doing triple with Arch. Kinda testing it out at the moment. I don't know if it's good to use Ubuntu as a benchmark--it used to give me all kinds of problems, but the 8.04 beta seems to have fixed them all.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

I came from Ubuntu 7.1 because at this time, when I tried Linux on my laptop, it was the best working system I have tried.
Nearly every hardware is supported out of the box and I liked it. And a few month later I get the idea of getting more into linux and so I tried arch.
But also with ubuntu I had to do some hand work, especially with the sound chip. But I never noticed that the master volume switch was missing.

Re: [HELP]DELL Vostro 1400, problem with sound

Problem now complete solved, it seems. With the new kernel (2.6.25) and options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack I can get both a working speaker and the master channel.

Previously I was using 5stack as the model, and got no sound (except from the middle plug~~sorry, bad English~~wish you know what I mean). I got the necessary info from this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=616845
and dell-3stack works perfectly. Funny that I never heard of this model before.
