Strange,
when I try to start tagtool, this error occurs:
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/home/$user/.tagtoolrc"
** (tagtool:19769): WARNING **: Failed to read preferences file
When I create this .tagtoolrc file, it becomes this:
/home/$user/.tagtoolrc:1: parser error : Document is empty
^
/home/$user/.tagtoolrc:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found^
** (tagtool:19777): WARNING **: Failed to read preferences file

A warning is typically non-fatal (unlike an error). Presumably this isn't the reason that the application is not starting.

It starts fine here -- with or without the .tagtoolrc file (it does produce the warning when started without the config file but starts ok nevertheless).

I forgot to mention that at the end of the error message it says something like "memory access error".
I'm sure that this is the true reason. But why?

No idea, sorry, but it tagtool doesn't work I'd recommend trying something like easytag instead -- I actually prefer easytag and use it myself, even though I'm the maintainer of tagtool package in AUR.

I don't like Easytag. Tagtool does EXACTLY what I want.

I get this error when trying to use tagtool. Can someone post an example .tagtoolrc file? I don't see any documentation on the app's website.

I just tried and in my case the .tagtoolrc file was created automatically during the first time I run the program on my computer -- I only got the warning on the first run, afterwards it starts up without any messages.
Anyways, here is the file that was created on my system: http://pastebin.ca/980451

Thanks, that's the file I needed to get it to work.
But it doesn't do what I want, too minimal for me. Easytag works pretty well, but I really like Tag&Rename for windows, but this ain't windows and I'm not going to wine it.
