Hi all, just been playing with the beta version of Ubuntu 8 and I was wondering if tracker is included with Arch? I have tried to install it via pacman and it says it is installed, but I cannot see it under System > Preferences and none of the commands work as posted on their website. I believe this is a part of Gnome, I am using Gnome 2.22.
Cheers

you have to install "tracker-gnome-search-tool" too. the "tracker" package contains only the daemon.

It should be at /usr/bin. Try installing them again.

Not that important but the error you got is because you used '-r' instead of '-R'.

Cheers for that bender02, I changed the -r to -R and this is what I got
pacman -R tracker-gnome-search-tool tracker

Now if I issue whereis trackerd, I get :-
trackerd: /usr/bin/trackerd /usr/share/man/man1/trackerd.1.gz
Which is cool.
Now I also installed the deskbar-applet as suggested by tracker, I downloaded it, but how do I run it and how do I add it to the applet manager for Gnome?
Also, when I run tracker I get the following: -
(tracker-search-tool:3347): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:

** (tracker-search-tool:3347): WARNING **: Unable to connect to dbus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Is this something to worry about?
Cheers

All I needed to do was reboot. Doh! Now I have tracker and deskbar sitting on my panel.
Thanks all for your help and guidance with this.

Bad news I'm afraid guys. I did a pacman -Syu today and it upgraded my tracker to version 0.6.6.2 and now my gnome is kinda broke. The splash screen appears as usual and then it stays on the screen until I click on it. Now my desktop background won't show and no menu will pop up when I right click anywhere on the desktop.
If I try and run tracker-search-tool from a command prompt I get this error: -
tracker-search-tool: error while loading shared libraries: libtrackerclient.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Not sure if this is relevant but glib also upgraded.

pacman -S libtracker (may need to use pacman -Sf) - may fix things for you

Nothing serious, just the file was not downloaded correctly (doesn't pass md5 check). Delete it and download again.

Should I use the -Sf switch or just plain -S?

You should first of all *delete* the file - 'rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/libtracker-0.6.6-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' as root (provided you didn't change the default path where pacman downloads packages), and then again 'pacman -S libtracker'. If that complains about conflicting files, use -Sf. You should always use -S, only when it complains about conflicting files *and you know what's going on*, you can use -Sf.
EDIT: It's surprising that things went well on the upgrade, and now the file is corrupted. Something strange is going on in your system.

Hmm... mayhap you are right, but as its a VM environment at the moment if I bork things up it is no major loss. I always play around with a VM version before I commit to the real deal.
Cheers for all your help with this guys
