Slow `play` command

I have a strange problem with the `play` command.
When i run

play whoosh.wav

It sleeps for about 1 minute and then

Input File     : 'whoosh.wav'
Sample Size    : 8-bit (1 byte)
Sample Encoding: unsigned
Channels       : 1
Sample Rate    : 11025

Time: 00:01.93 [00:00.00] of 00:01.93 (100% ) Samples out: 21.3k Clips: 0
Done.

it runs.

This command runs perfectly one month ago..so what does it change? What could create this delay?

P.S. I'm running kde (3.4.*) and my user is in the audio group. Only this command have this behaivour, amarok & xine (or mplayer) work fine.
