New laptop, need a PCMCIA wireless card

I was given a pretty old laptop but it doesn't have any networking card.  No modem, LAN or wireless.  So I'm in the market for a pcmcia wireless card that has good support in Linux.  It must be able to support promiscuous mode as well.

Any recommendations?  I'm willing to spend $100+ for a good one but I don't want to if I don't have to, of course.

I have one from Lucent Technologies. I cannot look at the specific model number right now, because my connection would break down big_smile
Just buy some cheap, standard stuff (20-30 bucks) rather than anything exotic.

I can only recommend to avoid Realtek ones. Only chance to get them running is by ndiswrapper, and even with it they tend to hiccup.

RaLink ones have given me good results so far, with the legacy drivers. Once the kernel ones mature, they will be as good as anything else (plus, RaLink are not expensive).

hope that helps some.

I use a netgear wg511t which has an atheros chipset and works very well with linux, it also supports monitor/promiscuous mode, and is apparently easy to modify if you like soldering projects.
