I'm not actually using the famd daemon with XFce 4.4. Anyone can tell me if it's worth? My system is running ok with hald, acpid, etc. (just the standard daemons)..
Thank you very much.

Certainly.
It will give you real-time changes in the file system, and it uses very little system resources.

I use fam in XFCE and it is good! There is another option to monitor file changes in XFCE but I can't remember what it is....

With inotify is famd still necessary?

I think so... from memory the thunar maintainer wanted to use fam over inotify because it is more compatible with other platforms.
The other option I was thinking of is gamin.

gamin works better than fam and is a drop in replacement. Simply install gamin and make sure that fam is removed from the daemons array. You don't need to put gamin there, it will automatically start.
One warning though: Thunar is prone to thread race conditions with either installed. It happens usually when you're switching hidden files off and on.

Bump to recommend pcmanfm over thunar. Thunar has become far worse lately with it's lock ups. I'm having to kill it manually four or five times a day at this point. This is not an Arch developer problem, it's without a doubt upstream.

I might give pcmanfn a go for the tabbed interface although I have absolutely no problems with Thunar...

You're not seeing the lock ups with Thunar+fam or gamin? It's well documented on their bug tracker that this is an issue.

I use Thunar+fam and can not remember ever having to kill Thunar manually. Not saying it does not happen, just I am lucky!

Same here, I've been using Thunar + fam for past 2 months without any problem. Maybe I'm just lucky like Allan?

Maybe I'm just cursed. After all, I use to be a Mandriva user...
--EDIT--
I've been seeing this on both my 64 bit and 32 bit machines. The Thunar dev(s) is aware of this. Some of you aren't seeing this?

I haven't had any major problems with it skottish. I can recall maybe once or twice in the past month. I actually ended up switching to PCManFM for the tabbed interface and I've grown to like it quite a bit. Give it a try if you haven't already.

Thanks for the tip... pcmanfm is definitely one nice looking little file manager. I'm going to try it, as I've never been a big fan of Thunar, although it is better than the previous xfce file manager.

I had to stop loading FAM, freakin process would hog the CPU when closing Thunar. Dosen't happen all the time but enough to stop using it. x86_64 here.

@skottish
You're not alone, I stay away from Thunar because it doesn't play well w/fam (for me).

I must be lucky. I've used Fam with Thunar for the past two weeks and haven't noticed anything. Haven't been switching hidden files on and off (I usually know where I'm going and type it into the address bar), so maybe that's part of it.
