ATI GFX Card Issues

Hi All,

Not sure if I should post this here or in the Laptop Issues forum, so here goes. I have got a Samsung P10c laptop which uses an ATI Radeon GFX card. I know the card is good as I booted the new gOS-Space livecd and compiz and AWN work fantastically. So I install arch core and then pulled down Xorg, Gnome and GDM. Hwd -xa says that I have a radeon card, but when I bring down xf86-video-radeonhd I get an error in Xorg to do with 'type1' not loaded. If I change xorg.conf to use vesa then xorg starts with no issues.

My questions are: - this type1 is a type of font, do I need some special font to use the radeonhd driver? I want to be able to use compiz and AWN on this box so what do I need to do to get it working?

The only experience I have had with Linux and ATI cards are on Ubuntu and I swapped it for an nVidia card and I had no issues, but unfortunately I cannot remove the ATI card in the laptop.

Cheers

EmyrB

Re: ATI GFX Card Issues

Abit more info about your gfx card would be nice, other than ATI radeon. pref. modelname.

Wrong driver, you need xf86-video-ati.

If the driver works, I will update the hwd's xorgtable. What I need is the vendor and device id e.g.  [1002:7145]. Run "lspci -nn" and post the result of "VGA compatible controller".

Well it did work. I downloaded the driver that gradgrind recommended and then ran hwd -xa which reported Radeon at the end. But GDM loaded fine. I will run "lspci -nn" tonight and I will post the results.

Re: ATI GFX Card Issues

Erm... not sure if I have a broken install of Arch. I am in Gnome 2.22 and under Applications > Accessories there are only 2 entries, character map and root terminal. Character map works but root terminal does not. It asks for the root password and then nothing happens. Also if I try and run terminal using run application it says that terminal cannot be found. I used the 2008 RC iso's.

Re: ATI GFX Card Issues

OK I thought I'd post an update in the hope that someone can shed some light on this. I have downloaded the latest RC of Arch 2008 and also Don't Panic 2007.02 and the RC of Arch 2008 doesn't let me run terminal at all. The 2007.02 Don't Panic went fine until thew end of the install and rc.conf and the locale were all blank, nothing in them.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: ATI GFX Card Issues

I have fixed the issues with the terminal, the Gnome 2.22 package doesn't seem to have gnome-terminal included. Any way back to the point in hand...

@rasat here is the result of lspci -nn:-

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] [1002:4c57]

To use compiz and AWN how would I go about this, do I need to install the catalyst drivers?

Cheers

Re: ATI GFX Card Issues

Try the catalyst driver. Many Radeon cards are using it.

# pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils

Run:
# hwd -xa
# aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

This updates the xorg.conf. Then restart X.
