about 10x registered users on forum. 120 000 users. Sounds good.

Another number would be 29 million linux users which of 4% use arch according to linux desktop survey = 1 160 000 users.
Now divide that by ten and you get the 120 000 users. Which much be pretty correct then

Well there's 285 pages in the User list

At ~50 per page X284 plus the 6 on the last page is ~ 14206

yeah, bout user list. there's 285 pages and if sort by no. of posts u see users with posts from 1 to 211, and 212 -285 - they all got 0 posts, so ... my calculation says that potential users are ~10500 users.

if you can count the number of active users(the ones who log in in the forums), and you add some users who don't login, that could be a very good estimate, instead the number of registered users, you would still have the users who participate but don't use arch currently, but being conservative in the number of users who use Arch but don't log in in the forums could give you some numbers.

Still must add the users who don't speak English, so can't log in in the forums(maybe we shouldn't be conservative in the users who don't log in).

Don't forget the international communities. I assume not all Archers are proficient in English, so they choose to stick with their local community. I'm not sure this would bring up the figures so much... could we add 1000, perhaps?

But since Arch's policy is 'they always come back', these astray users should be counted! Subtract maybe some exceptions - btw, do we have statistics on the number of people to return to Arch after having tried another distro?

If we truly are going to do a peoplecount, we should use an online survey-site with some questions (username - location - how many computers) and then the survey can be posted in all local communities. After a month or so, one should have a good estimate of the number of users and the geographical spread.

If done once a year f.e., one could keep statistics. And of course, no bonus or even the sack for the 'current' maintainer if the figures have dropped more than 5% (error margin) .

Actually, they could probably get a decent figure from just combining all the mirror's logs after a key update to something in core that likely everyone upgrades.

There used to be a program called archstats that allowed you to 'count yourself in' as well as reporting other generic stats the number of packages installed, etc. As far as I know it has died off, but you you do some searching you might be able to revive it.

You'll never get an accurate count because some people use Arch without logging into the forums, some will never send an e-mail to the mailing list, some won't install Arch Stats, some might install it on multiple computers for one user, some will use a slightly modified form of Arch, etc.

As of right now, the total number of registered users on this forum is 14228.  We average around 15 new registered users per day. I don't think that would tell you anything about the number of people actually using Arch, or about how many computers currently have Arch installed. My gut feeling is there are well over 100 000 people using Arch, but I'd have to quantify that with a give or take 50 000 ;-)

Or Arch is actually a myth and we're using a stripped down ubuntu...
but as a serious guess I would say 25 000 ish, but how can you know with linux? People may be using arch without knowing if an admin has it set up!

i consider an truly arch user the one that only uses archlinux as only distro....but still i dont see whats the big deal no "how many ppl use arch"?!!? whats not to use in arch? sure i had a few problm but not type of ones that would make me leave...for so long ive been using arch i convice myself that this is the only distro that works for me...i bet that are other u think this way too...this topic gets me sad...arch offer so mutch...

Arch is truly the only distro that (nearly) effortlessly does everything I want/need.
I find myself fighting with other distros and OS's, and constantly asking "Why?"
Arch really keeps it simple enough for a dope like me.

I moved to Arch from Ubuntu. And I'm charmed of the configuring ability and simplicity of Arch. In 'how many' I just wanted to know the aproximately estimated amount of people who use Arch. Not for statistic, scientistic work or something like that. Just to know for myself.

And I want to popularize Arch.

I cant use Arch only. Some programs for my work need offtopic. Russian users know good that programs: law data bases GARANT and Consultant+, 1C: - accounting program makes complications and loves M$ too.

This is interesting for me at the moment as a discussion came up along these lines yesterday after Mark Shuttleworth personally reckoned that ubuntu had 8-9 million users.  I know for a fact that the Ubuntu forums have gained arch at least 100 users alone, due to the  Arch Sub-Forum there. Also, the IRC channel is busier with new users than ever before. It has over 400 users in there as I type this. I personally reckon we could be above the 20,000 user stage -- possibly closer to 30-35,000.
Microsoft have stopped disputing an IDC survey that reckoned that the Linux desktop usage figures are now above 50 Million, and it's possible that Linux could have as much as 21% of the total Installed base now, servers included.
