I basically said it all in the title
I'm sorry for repeating this topic, I posted it a while ago but got really busy in the meantime and I just haven't had the time to deal with it. Basically when I click the "restart" or "shutdown" button GDM just drops me to a console login.
The other issue is that it won't display the face browser. I've set it to "themed with facebrowser" and I know the theme has one, but it just displays an empy border where the "faces" should be. This really isn't that important as much as the shutdown/reboot issue.
I've tried inspecting the GDM log files and couldn't find anything that could point me in the right direction. Here, I'll just post it here:

With GDM I experienced something similar. In let's say about 50% GDM doesn't shutdown/reboot but start over. In that case I just use the console, doesn't mean that much to me.

Is is possible that gdm is crashing?
How do you start gdm? the proper way is though runlevel 5 through /etc/inittab.

I am starting it through runlevel 5 in /etc/inittab.
