Am having occassional issues with sound on my laptop - every now and then it gets stuck in a loop and the only way I've found to deal with it is a complete reboot (not ideal if watching something!).
I've tried muting/unmuting in alsamixer, and have tried /etc/rc.d/alsa restart ...but nothing doing.
Anyone have any ideas?

try killing whatever process it is, or reloading your hardware's sound module.

I'll try killing next time it happens, but to be honest, last time I looked I couldn't see a process linked to it.

You could use something like sudo lsof /dev/snd/*

Sounds like the same problem I've been having.

Try to kill any processes that are capable of using the sound card. Alternatively, use audacious to play a short mp3 all the way through. That usually silences things.

Cheers - it's my wife's laptop, so I'll have to wait until it borks - but as soon as it does I'll try these suggestions. Thanks!
