I've created an OpenOffice splash image and it was elected to be the distro splash... As far as I can see, Arch is using the default OpenOffice splash image.. Is there a reason for this change ?

In general, Arch packages should be as close to upstream as possible. From memory, that was decided to include artwork.

I like the upstream concept but I really liked the splash screen . I just copied it from the online CVS .

Wasn't there a similar debate about this when T-u-N-i-X splash screen got chosen? If memory serves, the conclusion is that the OO.o package is so complex to maintain, that a little customization is worth it.
I'm not sure how things have change since then, but you should ask the OO.o package maintainer as to why your splash screen was not used for this release, T-u-N-i-X.

Allan summed it up nicely. We're trying to separate all custom artwork and branding from the upstream packages. These can then be provided as additional packages for download via AUR or, if a TU/Dev maintains the artwork, via community/extras.

there's no package for now.. i'm not trying to do a flame here but including a bmp file wouldn't increase the total work that much, would it ?

Not that I wouldn't like to have a branded OO, but this kind of argument can be applied to every individual patch, to every ... well, you get the idea.

Patience, T-u-N-i-X. Thayer says there will be a package that provide custom artwork, so there will be one eventually. Don't worry.

Isn't it possible to rebrand it (like firefox) with a script?
Not that I don't like the idea of it being applied to the package in the repo btw.

I liked the splash screen and don't think we should really avoid customization. I think you receive more benefit (advertising wise) from custom artwork than almost any other means.

Yeah, i also miss the Arch-splash screen. I understand that too much customization may difficult maintenance, but we also need some personality... i mean, the kernel has an arch logo, kde menu and so on. So everyone that watches our computer knows we're running Arch and not just a random distribution. Anyway, it would be nice to have the OOo arch splash screen back.

I will be putting together artwork-related packages over the next couple of weeks. I will include an OOo splash package that contains the logo mentioned above--it will be optional (e.g. not included with the default OOo package.)

Thanks a lot man.
I think those optional packages may give you much more work than just including the arch-stuff with standard packages, but i think you have a good reason to choose this way.
