ASUS W6F: went to sleep and can't wake up now

Hi,

I decided to replace the CentOS 5.1 install on my wife's laptop (ASUS W6F) by Arch. I just installed the base system, no X11, no anything. The computer was unattended for the time of my breakfast. To wake it up, I pressed the [Shift] key as usual, but now, the screen is so dark it's barely legible. I tried to reboot, but to no avail.

Now what? I promised her she could have it back in an hour or two, but this looks like a major showstopper.

Any suggestions?
