I know that all scripts SHOULD work with PHP5, but I have problems with some (not my own), could it be possible to keep a package for PHP4 for a while?

you should also take a look into trying to make those scripts a bit more forward compatable. the longer you wait the greater the security risk or the more work it will be.

phpBB for instance doesn't support php5 as of yet, and with some hacks I simply can't get the thing running. I'm aware of the 'security risks' but common be honest, for about 2-3 years php4 was good enough, why shouldn't it be good enough now?

"good enough" can be defined very widely ;-)
PC-DOS 5.0 was "good enough" for a lot of people for a longtime, but things change :-)
fortunately all my php stuff was php5 compatible, so i'm happy, but i understand your trouble with external code that is not php5 compatible - so you definitely need a php4 compatibility pkg for the migration -> but remember to tell the author of the non-compatible code that it is not future-compatible

Same phpSysInfo 2.2 doesn't work with php5... 2.3 is still cvs. If latest phpSysInfo is not compatible with newer php upgrades, this indicates there should be one package of each..... same as there is kernel24 and kernel26.

i was not saying there should be no php4 package but the sone ryou are able to port your remaining scripts over the better as php4 will likely soon be extinct. at that time you could be more out of luck than you are now.

one other thing ... phpBB is up to 2.0.10 which i believe came out after php5 so perhaps they have fixed their code to be more compliant?

Added code to let phpBB work with PHP5 for those having register_long_arrays set to off (default settings) - running phpBB 2.0.x with PHP5 is not supported at http://www.phpbb.com.

i updated phpbb to 2.0.10 and it seems to work for me locally - but i have a manipulated db, so it would be nice that somebody with a clean (original) phpbb install will check it against php5, just to make sure :-)

Ok, I still need a PHP4 package; and the link to the 4.3.7 @ amlug is dead. Would someone consider creating a PKGBUILD for php 4.3.10? I am running some applications that just won't work under PHP5 which are closed source as wel; so I can't do anything about that. Would the 4.3.?? version from CVS be a good startingpoint?

I have an experimental AL repo that contains PHP 4.3.10.
Add the following to /etc/pacman.conf as a repository listed before the [current] repository:
[justdoro]
server=http://www.justdoro.com/archlinuxAfter saving your changes, 'pacman -Sy php'. (You might have to remove php5 if you've already installed it.)
Let me know how this works -- like I said, it's an experimental repo.

PS: It's a slow link, so patience helps.
I have used your PKGBUILD and PHP.ini to succesfully create a package; thanks!

phpbb works well on php5 on arch. What is your pb exactly ? Maybe some mods you use ?

there is also a flag in php.ini that "forces" more compatability with php4. I really don't see why someone would still require php4.

MediaWiki (that is; the templateparser they use) still doesn't support PHP5. This will be fixed with the next release (1.5) which isn't yet stable
MyReact (forumsoftware) doesn't support PHP5 yet; and compability mode doesn't work either
