on a freshly new arch FTP install my spellchecker on Openoffice 2.3.1 within Gnome does not work at all. Got all the nessacary dictionaries under: /opt/openoffice/share/dict/ooo installed. Also the Openoffice Dictonary installer ist there. When I run as root: ooodi and locate to the dic. directory, I can not open that directory. chmod 777 of directory ooo does not help either.
When I want spellcheck a document, it tells my "spellcheck done" but acctually it does not do the job.

there are pacman packages for spellcheckers the process is really straightforward just use pacman to install them and restart OO

[Solved]
To fix the problem, you need to go to File > Wizards > Install New Dictionaries

I'm having the same problem too (OpenOffice 2.4). The Install New Dictionaries wizard contains a very limited choice of languages (no Russian language that I need), but even the English one won't install. Any ideas?

yes under the latest Openoffice version you can not install additional dictonary, you have to downgrade to a older version of Openoffice, there it works. check under wiki for downgrade, there is a link where you can get the older version
