Arch Kernel Panic on Old System

Its an old Intel Celeron 500MHz E-Tower, 128MB memory. I'v tried to boot using 'arch lowmem nopcmcia acpi=off' or 'arch lowmem ide-legacy' etc etc, everything leads to a message saying: "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task!".

Any idea on how I can boot into the arch install properly?

Thanks.

Re: Arch Kernel Panic on Old System

Isn't arch compiled for i686, meaning it won't work on a (i586) celeron?

According to wikipedia, celeron is an i686 chip:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I686.

Re: Arch Kernel Panic on Old System

Celeron is ALSO a i586 chip... depends on which chip you get.  Most recently, Intels overall plan has been to call new celerons... the old pentiums.  In other words.  WHen the new Pentiums come out, the previous Pentium chip gets clocked up and is called a celeron chip.  Take a look at the wiki for i586 and you'll see celeron listed there as well. AI... can you give us specific cereal numbers?

THanks!

Re: Arch Kernel Panic on Old System

The only serial number on the board that I can find is "QFK02 A00 01545" the computer model is "eTower 500is" if this is any help.

This seems to be the computer: http://www.shopping.com/xPF-E-Machines-etower-500is (mine has 128MB Dell memory however).
Thanks.

Re: Arch Kernel Panic on Old System

AFAIK, celerons 300mhz-~1ghz are based on the p2 core with a butchered cache & therfore quaify as i686.
I have a mendocino (300A) celeron in a laptop which fails with the same error using the latest install iso. 2007.8 (kernel 2.6.22) works fine.

Not sure what's going on here but it's certainly something to do with the new kernel and I have't found a boot option that fixes it yet.

If you want to be sure it's a p2 based chip, boot a livecd (i.e. knoppix) and 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' if 'cpu family' >= 6 then you have a 686 chip.

Steve.
