[RESOLVED] Can't switch between TTYs when GDM is running.

Hello, I have a strange problem because I can't think of why it would happen...

If I boot up without GDM starting (ie: runlevel 3), I can switch between TTYs with Ctrl+Alt+Fx perfectly well, however if I then start GDM (or boot into runlevel 5 so it starts automatically), I no longer have this ability. Any idea why?

I think this has nothing to do with gdm, it's a problem with X. Last time I had this it was because X didn't properly interpret my keyboard settings - so try to comment out any specific Xkb* stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and try to restart X.

On the other hand, it might be something else - then I don't know.

You're right, it's to do with X. I get the same problem after running startx. However, I can't comment out the Xkb stuff because that would make X use the US keyboard layout, and I need it to use the UK one. I'll experiment with commenting out different rules and see what makes it work.

I suggested commenting *all* out just to see if it helps. Then of course you'd add some of them back... to see which combination causes trouble.

I've commented them all, and uncommented them one by one. The lines which cause the problem are:

Option "XkbLayout" "uk"

and

Option "XkbVariant" "qwerty"

Did you solve it by commenting them out, or is it still happening?

I solved it by commenting them out, however I have the problem of having to use the US keyboard layout rather than the UK one.

Well the problem is that in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/* (that's where xorg takes the layouts from) there is no 'uk'.

Maybe this could go to the beginners guide, or to xorg wiki? What do you think, Misfit?
