Gnome volume control 'jumping'

Hello,

When I try to control the volume in either Volume Control 2.22.0 or in the Volume Control panel applet in Gnome the volume 'jumps'. What I mean by this is when I try to move the slider slightly it behaves abnormally and 'jumps' around from muted, unmuted, or anywhere inbetween (sorry, not sure how else to explain it). If instead I use alsamixer instead to control the sound, the volume moves up/down without a problem. I'm using Alsa version 1.0.16 from www.alsa-project.org.

Happens here with GNOME 2.20.1 and Gentoo... It's definitely not Archlinux realted. The Gnome "Volume Control" application itself is jumpy too. I'm just not going to use them.

may be you should enable ESD in menu System>preferences>Sound!

it's buggy here too (gnome 2.22)(praka123 I've tried your solution but it didn't work )
I noticed that controlling volume with keyboard keys is not bugged (System -> Keyboard Shortcuts) but is there any alternative applet to use?
(mouse wheel is just too useful for me )

You might find VolWheel helpful.

To make VolWheel behave like the GNOME mixer applet, you might need to change the ALSA channel it controls from PCM to Master.

For what it's worth, this happened to me throughout the Hardy beta in Ubuntu. I wonder if we all have the same sound chip.

I have ICH8 family and the same issues. At some point the sound even goes mono and then back to stereo again, when I use the volume control 8-O

i noticed the same issue; i have only a usb plantronics headset plugged in; so thats not soundcard related; im using only alsamixer in the console now;that works great and i can live with it

I've tried it and works very well,
for those experiencing the same problem I suggest to give it a try..
(I had to change the channel to Front)

same problem here. It's just frustrating to set the volume in gnome-volume-control with the mousewheel xD..

same problem here.
Intel Corporation 82801 (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04) using module snd_intel8x0.

my current workaround is to use alsamixer in a terminal.
really sucks not being able to control the volume with the mousewheel

This has nothing to do with mousewheel. I see this bug without using the mousewheel to control the sliders. it is a alsa problem.

If you're using Intel HDA (or similar) audio, try setting the main volume control to Master rather than Front. As of the current kernel Intel HDA chips seem to have a Master control - just set Front to 100 and adjust Master instead, and you shouldn't get any jumping.

I always use "master" to change the volume.
So i don't think that's gonna work (at least for me)

same problem here. I noticed it the moment i restarted after upgradinig to 2.6.25 Kernel. What happens is (at least for me) the following [assume the volume is being 'increased' using Keyboard or GUI control.

->Vol at 40%
->Vol at 41%
->Vol at 42%... until
->Vol at 0%
->L at 1% R at 0%
->I go to Control app and notice for some reason L and R channels are now unlinked. So i link them back but i cant seem to get the volume up with it linked, the moment i do it goes back to about 0% for both and unlinks. So i moved them seperatley, it worked i have both at 50%, so i felt clever and linked it so i can use keyboard for control, and it went back to unlink+0%ish.

And so on and so forth. U get this is a repeated loop. Once i use alsamixer in console (if channels are unlinked i find they are different volumes so i jst put them back together by maxing both, and now they are linked again) from then on i can change volume using alsamixer OR mplayer for instance (since volume control for mplayer is tied into the PCM volume (NOT Master)) in my case. Of course if i set 3D to post rather than pre PCM volume control becomes useless as always, so mplayer volume control does nothing but mere show. I jst have alsa on Vc/2 so i switch to it when i want to. It is ANNOYING can someone please help.

no change here, just wanted to post a link to a video i created yesterday.

it shows the weird behaviour.
in the first part of the clip i kept on pressing the button "volume +" on a logitech media keyboard.

my current workaround - just like Tj - is to open up a vc and run alsamixer in it.
so i can jump to that console to set the volume...

I changed the mixer to 'OSS Mixer' (in the preference dialogue of gnome-volume-control) and the problem don't show up (at least I'm now able to set the volume with the mousewheel again), maybe that problem is ALSA related.

i also have that problem on my hp pavilion dv2580et laptop computer...

the problem also happens with keyboard shortcuts... i noticed the issue that way..

by the way, only 1 of my speakers work on my laptop and i suspect that it's a linux related problem... will try with some other older distro..

Hmm, it already looks like ALSA problem. When I use OSS, the problem disappear.

Switching the volume control to Master fixed it for me.
Change it both by right clicking the applet and in the preferences menu.

i just created packages of the latest alsa-packages - but that doesnt change anything.

It jumps for me too, and I use Master as well.

I might try VolWheel from AUR as suggested.
