crazy xorg problems

Ive tried everything from the beginner's wiki and looked on here for answers.
I've done hwd -xa, hwd -x, xorgconfig and the stopping point I get to is where X loads, and freezes. It doesnt return me to a console, and I cant cntrl- alt- delete to get back to a console.

What will happen (that I can see is that x loads, then the left side of the monitor flashes vertical lines, and it locks up. This usually takes three or so seconds to happen, and prior to that, i can move the mouse.
I've tried different drivers, and of course tried vesa, and have had no luck. I have an old viewsconic monitor (15") that was given to me to use on this computer. Model is VE150m.

Thanks.
And if I missed somthing obvious, I apologize in advance.

Re: crazy xorg problems

Mh... I've seen something like this and was caused by Nvidia proprietary drivers. What drivers do you have installed?

In all cases, make the proper changes in your XF86Config file to use vesa or... And come back here to tell us what happens. Aside, do you have anything unusual in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

Re: crazy xorg problems

The X configuration file in Arch is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: crazy xorg problems

thanks for help once again, guys.
As a fair warning, Im sure the xorg.0.log will be really messed up. I tried several things before starting this post, and I bet it reflects that...

Re: crazy xorg problems

There is an (somewhat old) bug discussing this:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7658

It seems that the solution is to suspend the DRI module. So try commenting out the section on DRI in your /etc/X11/XF86Config (or /etc/X11/xorg.conf) like this:

# Section "DRI"
# Mode 0666
# EndSection

then restart X. Tell us if this does the trick.

P.S.: By the way, you can use the code tags (see in the menu when posting) this will instanciate scrollbars on the side. It makes stuff more compact. smile

Re: crazy xorg problems

it definately had a visible effect in that the bars that did appear on the left side of the screen now appear vertically all the way thrrough (like an ugly background) but it still makes X freeze.
should I have commented out "load dri" at the top, in the modules section?
