Re: Gnome fork. Looks promising.

haha. are you serious? wink
he doesn't like the button order he does a fork.
he doesn't like the fact that GNOME doesn't look as muchto windows as KDE [he even says he's not satisfied of people switching to KDE]
WHY?
if he doesn't like the spatial and the button order (I LIKE THEM) then he should just use KDE.

Microsoft wasn't so clever in the beggining to have:
[Cancel] [OK]

most of the time you click OK. so for most right-handers it should be right.
he doesn't like he does GoneME

I would say: "Gone with the Wind"

Re: Gnome fork. Looks promising.

He may have a point about dependencies and the use of different api, but it looks like he doesnt understand that gnome is aiming for the average joe.

Something I really dislike is dumbifying people down to a low level area and kicking their skills with disrespect. One example is names that appear in menus for applications. 'Web browser'. Now what Web browser is meant here ? Firefox, Galeon, Epiphany, Atlantis.

Imagine discovering that Galeon is a webbrowser.

Well, it's just my opinion wink

Re: Gnome fork. Looks promising.

I don't care about the button thing. I think that he's right, about the point that gnome is a bloat, and that it shouldn't need like a million GB dependencies, like mono, all those specific gnome libs, and all the other stuff. I would like it to be plain gtk. It would be a lot nicer. I also hate gconf. One of the things I hate the most of windows, is it's damn registry, and GNOME does the same thing. Thank god, it's only gnome, and not the entire OS, like in windows, but I think it's also bad to have to reinstall the DE every six months.

Re: Gnome fork. Looks promising.

Actually, if you happened to READ the page, it isn't even a fork. It's just a patch set which just MAY someday become a fork. I agree with most of the comments the author said in the page. I'm clad someone will try to put the fat Gnome pig on a diet.

zeppelin: there's much more than the buttons there too, that's just one small part of it.
Where does he mention that he wants Gnome to look like Windows or KDE? Nowhere.
He only wants a DE that fits nicely in UNIX.

kakabaratruskia: Exactly. I'd like it to be plain GTK too. All those dependencies suck. The dependencies are partly why I don't use Gnome or KDE (or any of their programs).

TO ALL GNOME LOVERS: GoneME is NOT for you! It's for those who aren't pleased with Gnome. So stop saying bad things about it. It's open source, people can do anything they want with it, expecially when it's one of the original Gnome creators.

I'm waiting for XFCE 4.2, it's Nautilus or Bust for me and the new file manager for 4.2 looks promising.

hehe... Nautilus...  I really don't like the spatial thing, but I don't like xffm either.  My favorite FM is emelfm2.  Unfortunatly, although there's a version in staging (I think...) it's out of date and broken.  If you want to try it, I suggest googling for it and building 0.0.8, it's quite small (~300kb), so it shouldn't be an overly time-consuming build.
