Running XFCE now I cannot change GTK themes. Clearlooks, Murrina, etc. are installed, but when I want to actually change the theme (say, to a dark one), nothing will happen.
Starting an OpenBox environment everything works nicely...
Any ideas what to check for?

How are you trying to change the GTK theme? ~/.gtkrc-2.0 won't work, but going through User Interface Settings should.

That's how I am trying to achieve things. Settings > User Interface Settings.
Under OpenBox I am using gtk-chtheme...
Odd enough - I just tried gtk-chtheme under XFCE to change themes and it worked... But XFCEs default method doesn't.

well, the way xfce works is a little bit different. when you use xfce's built-in theme changer, it create a preference in .config/xfce folder. if you have .gtkrc-2.0 in your home directory, that will override any settings xfce creates
so short answer, delete your .gtkrc-2.0 file and then changes made from xfce's UI will work.

Now what shall I say? That was the solution!
Thanks a bunch, mate!

Don't forget to edit your thread topic to say "solved"
Glad you fixed it.
