system will not boot

HELP!!!!
I've upgraded to kernel-2.6.25 and got a major kernel panic.
the strange thing is that I also use the rt-kernel and that panics too.
I've downloaded the newest ArchLiveCD and have tried to boot from there....nothing.
Well, I don't understand how to rescue from there.

error:

EXT3-fs: hda3: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (4000400)

kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device hda3(3,3)
kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I'm pretty sure that hda3(3,3) should be hda3(0,0)

MAJOR HELP NEEDED HERE AS IMPORTANT WORK FILES ARE ON THAT SYSTEM.

THANX IN ADVANCE.

Re: system will not boot

See if this apply to you: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=47357

Besides that what is the entry of menu.lst since it point to wrong partitions?

If the kernel on the CD isn't able to boot into your system you might need to chroot it. See this Wiki explanation: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Panics

Re: system will not boot

thanx KimTjik,

the wiki on kernel panics and grub doesn't work because I can't mount fs ext3 which is what my fs was for /dev/hda3. was able somehow to see my menu.lst. my system seems to be looking for sda, not hda as I have it set up so edited my menu.lst to sda and not system looks for grub.
also http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=47357 doesn't apply.

I can't mount anything as mentioned in the wiki for kernel panics or reinstalling grub.

also, what is ext4?? I removed my harddrive and attached it externally via usb to a ubuntu box and my Archlinux drive has an ext2 and an ext4. that is the problem, the ext4.
unable to access it to even rescue my files.

Re: system will not boot

ext4 is the next generation file system, succeeding ext3 of course.

I dont know how you got ext4 on your system tongue but I would recommend using a Fedora live cd to access your files. I remember they support ext4 on their live cd's.

Re: system will not boot

Thanx but too late. lost everything. I don't have a clue how it got on my system. I did an upgrade, all went fine. Shut off a few times, no probs until that day. I'm afraid to do anymore updates from testing now. I've never had a major issue from testing because   everything dangerous came with a warning in pacman. Nothing this time at all.

I've reinstalled Arch but a new problem. I need some apps that use and older gcc, do you have an old version in your cache or does anyone??

Thanx...

Re: system will not boot

Could it be that issue between Grub and the new forward compatibility between ext3 and ext4, which mean that the filesystem has 245 byte inod? I've no insight in the issue, but I just saw some reports about it lately.

Edit: wow 245 bytes looks like a very odd number and it is. 256 bytes it should be!
