has anyone got the pop3_ conky commands to work with gmail? For me it doesn't error out, but doesn't show any email info. I wonder if it is because I have non alph-num chars in my password.

Put in some effort yourself, there's tons of examples in the conky topic and in the screenshot topics. Mail check scripts can be found both there and by skilled googling.

the goal is to not use some separate script to get an unread messages count. conky provides a pop-based (pop3_unseen) command for this. a google search on the command reveals no useful hits. The command api itself does not mention anything about passwords with non alpha-num chars, nor does it mention using ssl, which gmail requires. bottom line: i have researched this and was reaching out to the forum to see if someone solved this problem.

I think conky's own POP3 capabilities are pretty limited . The package itself does not depend on SSL so I presume it is incapable of handing encrypted authentication. That's just a wild guess though, I have no thorough knowledge on the subject.

I don't display the gmail inbox. I use Terminus font without XFT, but with XFT Vera Sans mono looks great

there is no better place for .conkyrc file examples with screenshots than this thread in the ubuntu forums...
