I've been using Debian and Ubuntu for 5 years or so with a small dose of Fedora in between and I was looking for a distro a little more challenging. I could have stayed with Deb, but I know it in and out .
I tried out the Arch distro from the Linux Format under VirtialBox and was blown away. This is what I've been waiting for. Something to force me out of my comfort zone. I'm now customizing bash/zsh adding aliases and a lot more CLI customizing.
I could have done all this in Deb or Ubuntu, but I feel I want to get into the guts of the OS in Arch.
Thanks for an AWESOME distro guys.
Oh, the wiki kicks ass too, there's a wealth of info there.

+1
me too.
although, not fully understanding why you could not customise deb or ubuntu , or for that fact any distro. Just login to a console (not even X) and customise away. Any distro supports that.
arch is the only i686 out of the box distro, for me. I played with gentoo which was comparable in performance, but lacks the community spirit and support offered by Arch.

I don't think he said he couldn't customize them.
Arch does open up a lot more customization options I never thought of when using ubuntu.
I just switched from ubuntu to Arch myself.

Fustrated Windows users have two options.
1. Resort to the throwing of computers out of windows.
2. Resort to the throwing of windows out of computers.

I've been on Gentoo the last 2-3 years now, but I am looking to switch to Arch.
I love the whole minimalist approach, but I tire of the constant compiling of things in Gentoo.
I've also kinda lost track of all the garbage I have installed over the years and feel the need to start fresh again.
Also, the community here does seem to be pretty good, which is another reason I decided on Arch.
Hopefully Arch will be my home for a long time to come.

And there are many more superb features like ABS and AUR packed with Arch Linux. I totally agree with the topic
