Do you have to open Firefox as root to install extensions? I can't figure out how the permissions work for things like this.

No, extensions are installed in the user's home directory.

I can't install search engines in firefox. I have to do it manually (go to the ftp server, download the extensions, and put them in the correct directory). Does someone know how to fix this.
And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?

What exactly is the problem/error blocking you from doing so?

I just click te link, a window pops up, asking me if I wan't to install the search engine, I click OK, and nothing happens. It does not install.

Here's my fix:
$ su -
# cd /opt/mozilla-firefox/lib/firefox-0.9.1
# chown root:users searchplugins
# chmod 775 searchplugins
There really SHOULD be a ~/.mozilla/firefox/default.klm/searchplugins/ directory for each user (there's one for extensions). Hopefully by 1.0 the Firefox people will change this.

If you create the directory, will Firefox look in it? It's simple enough to grab the plugin and throw it in you home directory somewhere.
