i've been using ubuntu for years and recently tried arch via virtualbox and now i'm sold!
i'm trying to install arch (Archlinux 2008.04-RC) on my laptop: compaq presario r3000 intel-celeron with the dreaded broadcom 4301 wireless chip set. i've also tried the most recent non-live version.
**the arch situation**
with arch, the boot/install freezes at the following line:
Loading UDev uevent [BUSY]
i've waited at this line for 10+ minutes so i don't think "it's just being slow" as some people have reported in other posts.
i don't know much about UDev, could this be related to the broadcom wireless?
either way, is there a work around for this?
**some possibly useful info**
it might be worth mentioning that i was't able to install the most recent version of ubuntu (8.04) using the normal, live cd. the boot of the live cd froze when the broadcom wireless was detected. i was able to install using the alternate install cd (non graphical). however, after installation and upon reboot, the system still froze when the broadcom was detected. this problem was remedied by booting in safe mode and blacklisting the broadcom modules.
after some research, the problem seems to be with the new broadcom modules in the new 2.6 kernel. it hasn't been fixed that i know of.
