viewing the installation guide while you install

I was thinking about trying the Arch. And I'm just wondering if I can view the installation guide or newbie guide while I install Arch.

I didn't find any txt of html files on the installation disk.
Does this mean that while I'm not very confident with installation process I should print out the installation guide or have another computer nearby to look into it?

Yep - you have to print it off or use another PC.

Good luck.

If you plan to print out - may I suggest a Firefox Addon with the lovely name "Nuke Anything Edvanced, which allows you to remove unneeded parts from the page before printing.

Good luck from me too...  Dont let you fool by the size of the beginners guide - it is just awesome comprehensive, installing is not that complicated as it may look.

Re: viewing the installation guide while you install

hi, I never tried it but..
(from the wiki) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide

"At any point in the install process, you can switch to your 5th virtual console (ALT-F5) to view the output from the commands the setup is running. Use (ALT-F1) to get back to your first console where the installer is running, and any F-key in between if you need to open another console to intervene manually for any reason."
at this point you can use:
extra/lynx 2.8.6-1 (a text browser)
this is an opportunity but I can't suggest it... it's better to print the guide

Re: viewing the installation guide while you install

While the beginners guide is more comprehensive, there should be a text file called 'archdoc.txt' on the install disk (well, its on my slightly outdated install disk, can't say for sure if its on the latest ones but I don't see why not).  after you have booted the install disk try a

find / -name archdoc.txt

to find it.

Re: viewing the installation guide while you install

I see. I have a suggestion smile
Why not to include txt version of the Beginners guide and Installation guide in english into the installations cd, so every one could view them using less during the installation process?
It will not take much space. Of cause it could be out dated compared to site version, but I think that this could be the nice feature of the installation cd.

Re: viewing the installation guide while you install

After you install Arch, you can view pages in the wiki with "links", a text browser.  It's very small and does the job very well.

At the command line, you can switch terminals via Ctrl + F1, Ctrl + F2, etc.  So you can view links in terminal two while hacking away at terminal one.  If you start an X session, sometimes your WM will take over this function, so use Ctrl + Alt + F1/F2/F3/etc. to get back to command-line terminals.

Look into gpm too, it gives you mouse support for the terminal.  Links is compatible with it and actually installs as a dependency when you install links.

Damn, shoot me - I forgot all about that!
Of course, you will need to print off the setting up your network part before you can use links...

Not a bad idea to put a text file on the install though.

Well, we just have to hope it gets implemented: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9902

EDIT: Actually it is very likely it will.
